Highlights:

  • The new solution will serve as the most sought-after solution for firms that need software to simplify the lives of data engineers and legal teams.
  • Microsoft Purview Compliance Manager now offers more than 150 suggestions across Microsoft’s solution portfolio.

Only recently, Microsoft had made it public that its Azure Purview data governance platform would be generally available. The tech giant has announced that it will be rebranding that platform. Microsoft is rebranding its data governance and compliance toolset by combining Azure Purview and Microsoft 365 data-related products under the “Microsoft Purview” name to form an all-inclusive umbrella. The new solution will serve as the most sought-after solution for firms that need software to simplify the lives of data engineers and legal teams.

The “new” Purview service was described as the “unification of Microsoft’s data governance and compliance capabilities.” The service offers risk and compliance protections and so-called “unified data governance” solutions.

The rebranding is quite simple: Azure Purview Data Catalog will become Microsoft Purview Data Catalog, and Microsoft 365 Advanced Audit will become Microsoft Purview Audit (Premium). Let’s look at the benefits of its new branding:

  • Delivers visibility into assets across your entire data estate.
  • One can easily access all your data, security, and risk solutions.
  • Protects and manages sensitive data across clouds, apps, and endpoints.
  • Safeguards end-to-end data risks and regulatory compliance.
  • Arms your organization to govern, protect, and manage data in new, comprehensive ways.

Microsoft Purview Compliance Manager now offers more than 150 suggestions across Microsoft’s solution portfolio. This enhancement is a “continuous compliance assessments” addition that has reached general availability.

Officials also mentioned the general availability of Purview Data Loss Prevention for macOS. Additionally, Microsoft is integrating more than 50 new classifiers into its sensitive information-type catalog. The 50 new classifiers were added to more than 200 sensitive information types already in effect. It is announcing the preview of coauthoring of encrypted documents for iOS and Android mobile devices, as well as adding more functionality to Microsoft Purview eDiscovery (Premium) to improve the identification of relevant data in Teams.

In recent times, the tech giant has been on a rebranding spree as it has overhauled many of its enterprise and cloud products. It has also grouped a number of related offerings together in Microsoft-branded suites, such as its privacy-management products under the “Microsoft Priva” brand.

Experts’ View:

Microsoft Purview will bring “that chief data officer and their team together with the risk officer, the compliance officer, and [have] a unified view and ability to manage data,” said Alym Rayani, general manager of compliance and privacy at Microsoft.

“One of the things we’ve been hearing from customers is, ‘Hey, I need to get a good understanding of my data environment, my data landscape. It lives across a range of systems. It lives in apps. It lives in different platforms,” Rayani said.
