Informatica Corp. has announced its acquisition of Privitar Ltd., a London-based company specializing in access controls, data privacy, and security remediation. The financial details of the transaction were not disclosed.

Incorporating Privitar’s technology into Informatica’s Intelligent Data Management Cloud, a platform designed for data analysis and management in large enterprises, is part of the company’s plan. The transaction is likely to close in the third quarter of this year.

Privitar’s software empowers businesses to facilitate self-service data access through collaborative workflows, regulatory controls, and cross-platform security enforcement governed by a unified policy. It asserts itself as the pioneering vendor in implementing privacy controls within complex data pipelines.

The company ensures that data assets have auditable and compliant access, adhering to key regulations such as the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation, Canada’s Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act, and the California Consumer Privacy Act.

Informatica already offers data privacy and protection features in its cloud data governance, cataloging, and cloud data masking services. These capabilities encompass policy management, data lineage for tracking data movement, sensitive data discovery, data classification, and data masking for mitigating risk exposure. A spokesperson stated, “Privitar brings an additional and complementary level of management granularity through access control definition and policy remediation that deepen Informatica’s abilities to meet today’s modern data governance use cases.”

Informatica CEO Amit Walia stated, “Data governance and responsible use of data is a growing priority for large businesses, but too often requires trading off agility and self-service.”

According to the spokesperson, Privitar currently has several partnerships and a presence on cloud marketplaces, and there are no immediate plans to make any changes to those arrangements. He added, “The long-term opportunity is to provide Privitar’s capabilities through Informatica channels as well.”

The spokesperson mentioned that Privitar would retain its standalone status in the short term to integrate it into IDMC eventually. While the pricing details are yet to be finalized, the Privitar service will likely adopt a consumption-based pricing model.

Established in 2014, Privitar has secured over USD 150 million in funding from 17 investors. Notably, the company completed its most recent funding round, a Series C, in 2020, raising an impressive USD 87 million. During that period, the company attained a valuation of USD 400 million. Prominent investors in Privitar include Accel Partners LP, Citi Ventures Inc., HSBC Venture Capital Coverage Group, and Salesforce Ventures LLC.

Over the past year, the decline in tech stock valuations has made startups more appealing to well-resourced companies like Informatica. Informatica has acquired 15 companies throughout its history, including Compact Solutions LLC, a metadata management software provider, and GreenBay Technologies Inc., a machine learning technology provider, both in 2020.
