Amazon Web Services at its re:Invent 2020 conference launched a series of services and tools that give a boost to edge computing and the Internet of Things use cases. Dirk Didascalou, AWS Vice President of IoT, said that the company has its “technology base established” for the technologies such as Edge Computing and IoT. Now, the company is trying to link the new tools with the existing cloud services.

Didascalou added, “We do have the fundamental basic building blocks with scale and capabilities of hybrid edge.” He laid down a separate point that customers are not considering IoT and edge computing as the most expecting segments. Also, they are talking about optimization more than specific technologies.

At re:Invent, Amazon Web Services(AWS) launched the following:

  • AWS IoT Greengrass 2 – It is a new version of AWS IoT Greengrass that has an open-source edge run-time with features for managing fleets. The customers can add and remove software components for various devices through it.
  • AWS IoT Core for LoraWAN – It provides support for low-power and long-range wide-area networking with AWS cloud. Though AWS LoraWAN will complement other connectivity options, it is handy for those enterprises that need to transmit the data within 1 mile to 10 miles.
  • Long-term support for FreeRTOS – FreeRTOS is an open-source operating system for microcontrollers. The product enables small, low-power edge devices and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) use it. The bug fixes and security updates come from Amazon Web Services (AWS).
  • AWS Fleet Manager – It manages resources and on-premise devices. The on-premise devices include low-power edge devices too.
